Eurostat was established already in 1953. In the course of the years, its tasks increased, and with the establishment of the European Economic Community in 1958 it became a Directorate General (DG) of the European Commission. Eurostat’s main task is to supply other DG’s with statistics and to provide data to the EC and other European institutions for the design, implementation and analysis of European policies.
This means Eurostat’s main responsibility is to supply the EU with European statistics which enable comparisons between countries and regions.
